On the previous page I ended up with a discussion of the origin of the mouth, anus and gut. The problem with the existing discussions is that they are constrained by the limiting criteria of being diagnosed when in the company of the Germ layers. This is faulty thinking. The mouth, anus and gut are a three-patterned ensemble that exist way outside this limited domain of inquiry and thus overlook establishing the pattern in its wider berth of application, even when the usage of such is unacknowledged as having extension and dimensions in multiple subject areas. While it is not customary to look at biological processes as if they were mechanical operations, the idea of mechanization is not without its merits for illustrative purposes. Let us take for example the activities found in the internal combustion engine, and use the language of biology alongside that used by mechanical engineers, though some of them may well privately resort to making the mental comparisons that I am doing, they simply do not actively nor openly discuss them as such to the extent that such a comparison is a household (commonly known) association:

Mechanized mouth, gut, anus as seen in the internal combustion engine

Now let's apply the mouth, anus, gut notion to a well-known experiment in chemical evolution, making note of the fact that the experiment is set up like a primitive organism with its mouth and anus on the same side instead of at polar ends of one another. Then again, the supposed chemical evolution may have had a different design in the early stages of biological development and it is this design which must be recreated in the laboratory as well as when attempting to defined what basic chemicals and environmental conditions prevailed. The primitive environmental conditions may well have exhibited a "mechanical" design especially suited to the intake, "digestion" (energy production/utilization) and exhaust systems of biology's development.

A mechanized experiment of the mouth, anus and gut

Indeed, the basic language of biology is as yet lost on humanity, though it creates supplemental references to underlying "codes" such as the triplet coding system of DNA. The vernaculars being employed have created a Tower of babbling nonsense in our research efforts because the human ego is getting in the way.

The three steps, occurrences, processes, or whatever labels you employ to describe the emergence, absence, presence, interaction, activity, etc., of the mouth, anus and gut (or whatever order and illustrative array you place them in), take place again and again and again. For example, you go into a theater, consume entertainment and perhaps food and beverages, and are then excreted when a show or performance is over. Be it a theater, a sports event, a concert, a neighborhood party, etc... Likewise, Spring opens up the budding process, summer digests it, fall begins the bowel movement into a wintry state of emptiness or hibernation until the next cycle. The activity of sex... followed perhaps by a pregnancy (or development of a disease)... followed by the birth of a child (or children, or illness). And though some people might want to entertain additional occurrences within this series, like those who add sub-categories to given themselves and others the impression of having a specialized perspective for defining personalized particularities, thus fulfilling some need of their ego, the basic "in- gestation/mulling about- out" segmentation occurs.

Yet, we have another problem with trying to devise a language that provides the necessary basic tool by which we can label the sequence without being distracted by "individualized ownerships" of given subjects. A type of universal language in which to perceive, analyze and describe the presence of basic patterns. Whereas one might think that numbers accommodate us in this regard, they actually don't. Numbers are not routinely used by everyone as a means of referencing general perceptions or ideas. Generally, people use numbers in individualized special ways of interpretation and expression... even basic numbers, that might otherwise be described as a personalized form of calculus, geometry and algebraic notation.

In an attempt to construct a simple language to describe the three items of mouth, gut, anus, we might for example choose the words "In- Mix- Out". Unfortunately, in my usage of this on the internet, it turned up a reference to the mixing of music. For whatever reason, the person who assigned importance to the sequence when writing the relevance of the associated program focused on the word "mix" and it was related to music. Had they been more interested in cooking or gardening or sociology, the association would no doubt be different. Hence, the sequence "In- Mix- Out" in a google image search rendered multiple images referencing associations to music.

I then tried the terms "In- Grinding- Out". The middle term again became the focus. The usage of the terms "Enter- Creation- Exit" brought up a mixture of images, but nothing which actually referenced biology, physics, music, etc..., or in other words, a large assortment of a variety of subjects.

Another type of labeling which might be used to describe the mouth, gut, anus scenario in terms that would not give the impression to some of being an expressed vulgarity to those with a different sensibility when it comes to bodily functions, is that which describes an offered three-part suggestion associated to mathematics related to commerce and practicality, as a means of concealing the presence of the consume, use, and dispense with most of the offerings because one uses only a select quantity for their particular interests... in this case a person occupies only a very limited set of territory on the Earth, or the country, state, territory, town, city, village in which they live. With respect to this consideration a colleague sent me a representation that is uniquely suited to this type of three-patterned formula, in that we have here a usage of three and language as if it were a definitive stepping stone to solving problems of location for every place on Earth described as: A precise, three-word address for every place on Earth, by creating a large grid:

A discussion about 3-word addresses

Using a grid of three to delineate every place on Earth

For those of you who are interested, you can look up your own three-word address here: What is what3words?

what3words location idea

Here is a Wikipedia reference to the what3words company: Wikipedia: What3words (geocode system)

And yet, how many readers are thinking about the three-patterned codes in physics (protons- neutrons- electrons), or genetics (triple coding), or even the everyday street signal (red- yellow- green), to name but three of the many hundreds which exist and predate the company's efforts to render its own version of that which may be an environmentally influenced genetic disposition?

If we think about the different subjects humanity is involved in, we might want to think of them as delineated grids of the human mind which describe location in terms of what, when, where, why... how. This is how one may describe the mouth, gut and anus as well, since they illustrate an inclination to gather information about where, when how, why a given type of activity takes place. In other words, though one may use the terms mouth, gut and anus as representing basic ideas, these too can be viewed as having more basic attributes when looked at from a different direction.

So now it appears we have some of humanity going to adopt a 3-patterned code under which lays other three-part codes of which the mouth, gut, anus extends deep into the sub-sub-sub layers of developmental biology and is also represented in mechanical variations that should then encourage the perspective to see the same ensemble in other forms and configurations, both constructively and destructively, as well as philosophically and imaginatively such as in songs, dance, sports, music, etc...

My "threesological" efforts have been an attempt to reveal the existence of simple patterns in simple language found in different subjects whose advocates use vernaculars and symbolism which very often deliberately try to conceal the patterns in order to give the impression they are involved with something that is difficult to understand, complex and requiring intense study to unravel even deeper mysteries. However, like all languages, that to be encountered is very simplistic patterns, and ideas, notions, musings, etc, about those perceptions which can be imaginatively rendered like a fairy tale, science fiction novel, abstract piece of art, musical "composition" (thrown together ensembles of personalized interest), stews, pastries, poach swing wooden whittling, doodlings, etc...

Years ago I was working with some young men who spoke Arabic. It wasn't too long before I began learning the language and started to understand the conversations that were being deliberately conveyed in Arabic so as to conceal what they young men had on their collective minds. It was the same young men interests I heard being conveyed in Spanish and English. Just a different vernacular with cultural idioms conveying the same types of interests and orientations and personalized interpretations of a given experience, desire, hope, consideration, after-thought, etc... The same thing occurs in all the different "languages" and symbolism of different subjects. And when you look past all the cultural "garments" and cosmetics of expression for a given time and place, you begin to see the same patterns being repeated. The same goes for mathematics. Not only is language often used to conceal the truth, but so are symbols that are said to be basic expressions intended to reveal underlying patterns and render the complex into simplicity... and yet in knowing the simple, the advocates use great dexterity to complicate understanding in an effort to stake a claim to their assumed knowledge of simplicity so as to create a specialized group of initiates into a club with its own rituals, ceremonies, awards and vernacular.

The presumed "complexity" seen in mathematics and biology and physics, etc., is little more than compounded simple patterns like grouping numbers into sets-of-three followed by a comma, though instead of numbers and commas, a variety of words, utterances, gestures, inflections, grimaces, silence, nods, knee jerks, coughs, sighs, yawns, smiles, winks, movements, and intermittent variations are being used to convey the repetition of simple patterns. The so-called difficulty and complexity is more an expression of the human ego involved in deliberately trying to conceal the simple repetitions or fumbling with an attempt to simplify the expressed complexifications of others with a means, method and language which may not be helpful to most of the people your are trying to teach about a given simple pattern. Your efforts, though well-intentioned, may in fact make a simple pattern more complex because you lack the necessary vernacular and technique for providing an understandable simplification that can be easily understood by those whose own personal vocabulary is not familiar with the terms of simplification you are using. In other words, you simple terms are a foreign language to them, making your simple expressions into a complex issue difficult to grasp.

While many people can see the simple underlying patterns and are in general agreement with what I have said, they lack an ability or the knowledge needed to convey the recognition of the simple patterns in the language of a given person whose primary interest may be auto mechanics, horse racing, cooking, sewing, hunting, Astrology, gambling, criminal activity, plumbing, general construction, botany, etc... What makes many situations more difficult is that the person may use their ego to complicate simple patterns so as to give themselves the impression that they are involved with that which portrays an assumed talent, giftedness, smartness, genius, or some virtue attributed to a religion or some label within a genre of activity which signals to them a personal uniqueness. Needless to say, they don't like anyone whose unraveling of their behaviors and ideas reveals a simple pattern that they have contorted into giving the impression of that which is being used to make a personal statement about a person's view(s) of themselves regarding their "specialness" that may or may not include an active acknowledgement of wanting to convey some semblance of what they believe to be is humility. They can be great, but humbly so... which makes their expressed humility a sign of subtle greatness to be cherished as being greater than another's humility!

The internet, books, classroom instructions, parental guidelines, laws, rules, etc., are often used as a means of expressing an authority figure's own efforts of illustrating their ego. Simple patterns are conveyed in ways which complicate recognizing the repetition of the same simple patterns being used in all subjects, but that there is no one cataloguing all the simple patterns in all the subjects in order to convey the existence of the repetition as an indication of what appears to be an environmentally imposed biological constraint forcing a deference to maintaining some semblance of an effort of pursuing a state of equilibrium that becomes rationalized in the ideas used in business, government, religion and most day to day concerns and evaluations of a person's personal strivings at survival.

When you spot the repetition of a simple pattern being repeated by a professional and convey it openly in a way that suggests to them that you are deriding, disparaging or belittling their interest in the pattern being conveyed in a subject-specific vernacular and symbolism, you may no longer be accused of heresy as many people were who "saw through" the personalized complexifications of simple religious ideas being used by religious authority of the past as a means of manipulating people for ulterior personal motives of power, wealth, sex, political machinations, etc., but you may be treated in what amounts to a similar manner by being given a poor grade for a course, disallowed to join a professional group, ostracized from those who participate in using a vernacular which helps to conceal the usage of repeated simple patterns, disregarded as a charlatan, a fool, or receive some other discrediting reference so as to assist a group in maintaining their assumed superiority of a given subject's material by concealing the patterns within compounded patterns using the basic tools of arithmetic, such as by adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing information so as to help them conceal the recognition of the simple pattern being repeated and provide an illusion that they are involved with a great puzzle, mystery, etc...

Interestingly, for those who do come to identify the simply patterns being repeated, they too often begin to complicate their perceptions with elaborations of decipherment and expression! Very often they will use a social context to give a simple pattern some lace-frilled importance which reminds me of the Tour de France (Tour of France) professional bike racing event. It is an event which takes place over different courses each year, so that the performance of different riders from year to year can not be compared. The French and other peoples like doing this because it helps conceal simple ideas by a social elaboration, just as they do with their language. Simplistic... and often immature activities and interests (like giving teddy bears and flowers to bicycle stage winners) is part of a traditional expression of an adolescent impulsiveness that avoids having to address the need for moving beyond a childish level of sensibility by trying to conceal the repetition in the usage of a non-repetitively occurring track or trail by which observers can mentally and physically cataloged the performances of riders from one generation to the next, under similar conditions, despite changes in weather, rules, racing equipment, diet, electronic assists, etc...

By changing the Tour of France course each year, the ability to catalog performance comparisons is made more difficult. It is like applying a variability of language expression and interpretation so as to advantage those who have an ulterior motive that can not be accomplished if a set pattern is used or outlined. It helps to conceal the revelation of repeating patterns by the usage of a social tactic that is itself a simple pattern being repeatedly used by the French and others. Like different games of chance, otherwise known as gambling... of which the Earth is filled with.

Is the mouth, gut, anus ensemble a representative model for an underlying pattern... be it three or otherwise, that is even more fundamental? Though it is recognized as a model most plainly seen in animals governed by a germ layer development, it is helpful for a cross-discipline study to adopt a more general list of defining characteristics. However, there is another aspect of this ensemble which might be taken into considering such as the size, if such a measurement might be of any comparative value at some time or another. For example, the length of the alimentary canal (esophagus, stomach, intestines, etc.,) between the mouth and the anus is generally measured in the adult human as being around 3 meters or 30 feet in length and is recognized as a muscular tube... or channel, or line with "beads" (or bracelet with charms) on it (such as the stomach, small and large intestines, etc...) Because of the relative consistency of this length, one might come to consider it has some underlying developmental significance as a separate issue, or along with the spacing of the pharynx, stomach, intestines, etc... Here is a list citing different references, followed by a reference which "lengthens" the list by adding additional comments related to it as it progresses over time:

Alimentary Canal Organs

Also called the gastrointestinal (GI) tract or gut, the alimentary canal (aliment- = "to nourish") is a one-way tube about 7.62 meters (25 feet) in length during life and closer to 10.67 meters (35 feet) in length when measured after death, once smooth muscle tone is lost. The main function of the organs of the alimentary canal is to nourish the body. This tube begins at the mouth and terminates at the anus. Between those two points, the canal is modified as the pharynx, esophagus, stomach, and small and large intestines to fit the functional needs of the body. Both the mouth and anus are open to the external environment; thus, food and wastes within the alimentary canal are technically considered to be outside the body. Only through the process of absorption do the nutrients in food enter into and nourish the body’s "inner space."

Overview of the Digestive System

As noted, the means by which we label the mouth, gut and anus can lead us into some disagreement if not confusion, particularly when we decide to venture outside the parameters of using the Germ layers as the primary means of initiating a discussion into this area of research, though those who like to broaden their perspectives do not permit themselves to be likewise constrained. For example, here is one sampling of looking at the meaning of the mouth, though it references a perspective within the typical domain of Germ layer association. Though somewhat dated, the information nonetheless directs the reader's attention concerning the differences of opinion which can be multiplied exponentially by going outside the domain of standard embryology. (I have shortened the available text.)

Mouth and Anus
By Edwin S. Goodrich, F.K.S.

Embryologists and more especially those zoologists who are engaged in teaching must long have felt that there is some confusion, or at least want of precision, in the use of the word mouth . Sometimes it is used to mean simply the anterior opening of the alimentary canal; at other times a more special morphological significance is attached to it, and the term is used to denote the anterior opening leading from the ectodermal stomodaeum into the endodermal cavity or enteron. For instance, in the larval Amphioxu s the aperture on the left side leading into the endodermal pharynx is called the mouth. At its margin ectoderm joins endoderm, and it is formed by the piercing of an opening at a point where the two layers meet and fuse. On the other hand, doubt arises as to what should be called mouth in the adult. The larval mouth becomes converted into the central aperture of the velum; hence this opening is often named 'true mouth' or 'mouth proper'. But other authors may prefer to give the name mouth to the larger more anterior opening situated between the right and left oral hoods, and leading into the buccal chamber lined by ectoderm. Clearly it is this latter opening which corresponds to the mouth, and the larval mouth which corresponds to the opening pierced in the 'oral membrane' of the craniate vertebrate.

Mouth and Anus (1935)

If I were to say that one could view the vagina as a type of mouth since it consumes sperm, "digests" it with body fluids and then expels the results after about nine months, some readers might disagree outright, while others find some measure of comparability and make some measurable allowance for it, all the while keeping in mind that a typical analysis and discussion of the mouth, gut and anus have a strict parameter of orientation and do not permit stepping outside the lines without being accused of indulging in speculative considerations which have no apparent bearing on the discussion or research as it is typically concerned with. Nonetheless, I am not constrained to make comparisons with what I interpret to be a tunnel vision approach to an analysis of recurring pattern similarities which are not constrained by the rules humans might what to place on them to fit the perspectives of a given authority or indulged-in perspective... though one might consider the lack of some constraint is the indulgence of a pursuit which does not provide a game that others can invest it because the rules can be altered arbitrarily through the application of competing definitions... though this is what constrained forms of analysis are guilty of themselves.
