I am a collector. Much like those who collect Baseball cards, coins, seashells, glass figurines, baseball caps, cook books, insects, etc... Like many a collector who first begins a collection as a sideline activity that develops into an interest and then a study, I have collected items referencing a "3." Over time my collection has expanded to collecting variations that I would not have thought of when I first started out. Whereas in the very early days I had only a few examples, I now have thousands from multiple subjects. However, the issue with collecting is that when you have a few examples it is rather easy to keep track of them such as putting them on a shelf or in my case, a small notebook. But as the collection grew I found I needed a method of putting them in some order that I could easily find and reference. To be honest, my present methodology is far from perfect, particularly when it comes to images and the need for cross-referencing. Using the standard 3-part Author- Title- Subject of a library book collection could work, but only if I returned to each example and relabeled them according to the usage of such a system. If I had started my collection with the foreknowledge that I would eventually need some system of collation, this might have made the preset day task of finding items more simpler, but I had no idea I was going to find as many as I have.

The already mentioned Yin/Yang idea with its multiples of paired ideas sometimes references ad opposites, dichotomies, dualities, binaries, etc., was a cognitive stopping point that later Chinese thinkers tried to think beyond the "2" to achieve a "3", as suggested by the idea of Chinese Triads in the I Ching, or Book of Changes. However, simply designating an idea as a triad does not make it so. In other words, if you look closely, we see a cognitive embellishment being practiced in that instead of 8 triads we actually have 8 embellished Dyads (or if you prefer, Biads). Whereas the 8 configurations do exhibit 3 line configurations, they are illustrations which repeat the single or double lines and do not present us with an actual 3-line portrait. It is an embellishment of the Male and Female "principles" (as the older writers were fond of saying). In a more direct sense of identification, the single-line is the male penis and the double-lines are the female vagina. There is no actual union, from which would produce an actual symbolic 3-line child representing a "stepping beyond" the cognitive 2-pattern.

I Ching triads are actually embellished byads

Anecdotally, though the I Ching with its original trigrams is said to be quite old (1000+ BC era), and much later these became 64 hexagrams (which can be seen as a pattern in chess and checker boards as well as the amino acids chart); it is the "3" which continued to be a preoccupation to the extent it showed up in the 3 inch measurement for the ideal foot size called the "three-inch golden lotus feet", having begun in the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). In other words, the "3" was a means of illustrating an attempt to reach some measure of perfection, of beauty, of truth... and thus power and privilege.

Bound feet of Chinese women in search of perfection

A bound foot can look like an artist's rendering of basic geometric forms (a triangle over a circle) which can be seen elsewhere:

3 Basic geometric forms may not be as basic as some describe

An interesting analogy to the foregoing image can be seen in a fresco from Pompeii which illustrates two individuals playing a game:

2 versus 3 differences of opinion

If we pursue another analogy on top of this image and say that the figure on the right is the right hemisphere of the brain and the left figure is the left hemisphere, the commonly recognized attributes (whether you believe in them or not), can be seen to reflect enumerations of "two-patterned ideas" for the right hemisphere and "three-patterned ideas" for the left hemisphere. And characteristic of a stoke affecting the opposite side of the body, we find that the heart on the right side has 3 valves called the tricuspid, and the opposite side as 2 valves called the mitral. Similarly, the right lung has three lobes and the left lung has two lobes. A very interesting "coincidence" that is not fully appreciated until the hemisphere attributes are given some visual illumination in a basic form, followed by a bit more subject referenced examples:

Some basic 2 versus 3-patterned ideas

Brain hemisphere attributes

If we use a Triune brain accommodation, the addition of Reptilian, or basic brain structure could be visualized as a "one", in terms of its singularity of survival intentions. In such a scope of thinking, we will note that there is not easily discernible struggle of morality concerned with good/bad or right/wrong, though in the actual life of a reptile there might be a dimension of cognitive activity to be described as a higher functioning process of encephalization we might term a reptile consciousness or reptile reasoning, aside from some otherwise described purely instinctually driven orientation.

The ancient Chinese were stuck in a 2-patterned frame of thinking, though there was an effort to exceed this model of conceptualization. And for those thinking the Chinese have done so in the present era as attested to by the excellence which some attain in Mathematics, I must point out that Mathematics has its origins in a different, but symbolic model of dichotomous thinking. It is part of a Persistent Dichotomies orientation also seen in Psychology. While Mathematics does attempt to go beyond the binary in computer language by using Boolean Algebra, the whole of Mathematics remains rooted in a world of pairing just as is Psychology and Philosophy... to some extent. They can't seem to break the cognitive bondage even if it requires adopting a new cognitive survival strategy as an extension of development, just as we see on the biological level where the single helix strand of RNA was later followed by a double helix strand of DNA that was followed later by a triple helix structure in collagen, and proteins have 3 types of chain folds.

In Aristotle's time he could not have taken into account the various triadic structures that have since been revealed by science and general cultural orientations, some of which have become adopted as traditions such as the three medals of the Olympics, the Win-Place-Show of horse racing, or the three major College Degrees of Bachelor's- Master's- PhD, to name but a few examples. But let us say... in his own way, he was on to something. There is no telling what he might of thought had he known about the 3 large particles of atoms, DNA's triplet code, not to mention a triune government formula used by the U.S.. Aristotle was not at fault for his rather rudimentary attempt to establish an anthropology of the Trinity, but those who followed him apparently did not fully understand his efforts to create a greater encapsulation of the Trinitarian attributes and diversification that is needed in order for the multitudes to have a personal connection with the Trinity from the perspective of their personal experiences.

HA! Then again, by what authority do I speak of the threes phenomena? Well, I have a Buckland clan member by the name of Raymond Buckland who studied witchcraft and wrote an influential book on the Subject. And another member of the Buckland clan William Buckland was not only a Theologian, but a geologist and paleontologist who befriended the famous and now fully recognized fossil hunter Mary Anning. (Note: William Buckland and his son had uncommon appetites: Eating every animal possible.) However, if these examples are not adequate enough to establish a pedigree, then by the authority of that grand historical figure know as... because "oSyaSI" commands it. HA!

When speaking of the Trinity as an example of the cognitive "3", it should be understood: "No theologian in the first three Christian centuries was a Trinitarian in the sense of a believing that the one God is tripersonal, containing equally divine "persons", Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." (History of Trinitarian Doctrines.)

In the same foregoing document we find something interesting because it is expressed to convey a single idea and not a means to encapsulate the whole:

...Sometimes popular anti-trinitarian literature paints "the" doctrine as strongly influenced by, or even illicitly poached from some non-Christian religious or philosophical tradition. Divine threesomes abound in the religious writings and art of ancient Europe, Egypt, the near east, and Asia. These include various threesomes of male deities, of female deities, of Father-Mother-Son groups, or of one body with three heads, or three faces on one head (Griffiths 1996). However, similarity alone doesn't prove Christian copying or even indirect influence, and many of these examples are, because of their time and place, unlikely to have influenced the development of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity.

However, the author should have continued with his presumed objective overview, by realizing that the absence of a direct or indirect influence does not exclude the possibility that all such examples may have had a similar singular influence, consistent with the notion of parallel evolution. For example, we see this on those occasions where twins were separated at birth and placed into adopted families who may live in different states or even countries. If they are paternal twins the similarities may be less obvious, but identical twins, despite their separation and different environmental influences, still retain a core structural patterning. While people notice the similarity of a "three" structure, they, like twins, could be brought up in a different language, social and weather environment. You may not notice a resemblance if one of the twins has long hair, a moustache, and beard, along with believing in different religions and wearing the garments appropriate to their cultural upbringing.

Conventionally speaking, we think of twins as those occurring to the same mother in the same life time, and not mothers who are themselves twins but occur in different life times and different places. While it is understood that people can look similar from different time periods, the idea that this occurrence represents a kind of twin not customarily defined, does not come to mind, nor that twins (or triplets, etc..) in different time periods can give birth to twins who also occur in different time periods and places. As such, trinities can appear to be similar but are labeled differently and have the garments as well as an associated language(s) of different time periods and places. There is no telling how many times a given person may have a twin as part of a reincarnation cycle, though it need not be due to reincarnation.

Note: the following Question/Answer focus on the "three" pattern can be substituted with any number or pattern the reader cares to. Patterns which have been enumerated have frequencies of occurrence as well as frequencies of absence and intermittancy. Such highs, middles, and lows can be plotted on a graph if one takes the time to do so, such as under the rationale of describing a segment of human cognitive activity. The reason for my interest in the "threes" is that I think it is a representation of an environmentally influenced pattern which is changing over time, and that this change will be reflected in human cognitive activity as a symbolic illustration. I also think that some life forms and the physiology of some people are more impressionable to subtleties of environmental change through mechanisms of detection not yet understood... though we commonly refer to animals as having a sensibility more attuned to Nature and thus exhibit this receptivity in behavior which is uncommon for them, such as becoming collectively agitated.

It goes without saying that we are dealing appreciably with spoken language, other symbolic languages such as music, art and mathematics are not discounted. It therefore behooves us to encounter a study of language from the earliest of beginnings dealing with human infancy and the development of language including the pre-linguistic activities associated with the infant's mouth. However, I will do this at a later time. Nonetheless, let me provide an introductory article: Infant vocalizations in response to speech: Vocal imitation and developmental change.

While scientists, theologians and philosophers grapple with the 'esoteric' (main stream ideas) relevant to their respective fields of inquiry, all these disciplines have been dismissive of the "three" or focused on a three-patterned peculiarity within the confines of their subject. In philosophy, for example, patterns-of-three are routinely used in a thesis describing a singular issue which may discuss the singularities within other thesis that may or may not also use a three-patterned format sometimes overlapping religion:

In religion it may be to promote or denounce some concept of a Trinity as a distinct entity, for example:

In the Science of biology there is the effort to uncover the origination of the triplet code, among multiple other interests in different venues which do not explicitly outline a visible three pattern. While some readers will be argumentatively focused on a comparison with the visibility of other number patterns and some may say it is due to the similarities inherent with the human brain, they don't see any single or collective repetition of patterning illustrative of human cognitive activity tied to a changing environmental event(s) whose changes can be described and defined.

I view the lack of attention to the "threes phenomena" to an imagined situation in the deep past where a person is trying to describe the beneficial use of iron as opposed to the use of stone for tools. However, the process involving the usage of iron is too complicated for those whose livelihoods and daily routines are engaged in a relationship with stone tool manufacturing that are dependent on one another. (Everybody uses and trades in stone.) Similarly, it is like those in the past who tried to convince the public in adopting the usage of an automobile instead of using a horse and wagon or buggy. However, before this era, the steam engine of James Watt met a similar resistance and thus he adopted the concept of horsepower which was introduced as a marketing gimmick as a means of descriptively comparing a horse to a machine to a public whose main education was at home, on the farm, or nearby mom and pop grocery shop. Another example is the idea of cell theory taking 200 years before it was generally accepted. No less, we also have Germ Theory Denialism. As another example, we have Georg Cantor who created the idea of the existence of an infinity of infinities, only to be ridiculed by his contemporaries.

Likewise, the mindset required to grasp a convention of "threes" may in some cases be similar to the situation teachers find when trying to teach students a given subject such as basic arithmetic, tell the time, or write their name, subject and class on every paper they are going to turn in.

  • Question: Where does the Threes idea come from?
    • Answer: It all depends on which Threes idea you're talking about.
  • Question: Is "three" a religious number?
    • Answer: Lots of religions and philosophies use various numbers (and some try to make a science of it), but they do not own numbers nor do they own any god, or angel or evil... or for that matter, a crystal ball for prognostication. Religions are self-appointed make-believe faiths acting as self-anointed go-betweens for those they have socially manipulated into believing as they do.
  • Question: Is three a Numerology number?
that is not steeped in Superstition.
    • Answer: for Numerologists yes, for others no. Numerologists provide superstitious answers for superstitious questions. Try asking them a question
  • Question: Is the Christian Trinity, Indian Trimurti and Egyptian triads similar types of threes?
    • Answer: Each are qualitative three-part ensembles that apparently originated from an ancient form of Nature worship involving the Sun's three phases (dawn- noon- dusk).
  • Question: Did patterns of three exist before humans created the number 3?
    • Answer A: If Science is to be believed, then yes. There are multiple 3-part ideas of science which pre-date humans.
    • Answer B: If Religion is to be believed, then maybe. (Triads, Trinities, Triunities and Trimurti may be symbols of a reality not understood and predates humanity.) [Humanity has an ongoing wrestling match with Religion and Philosophy.]
    • Answer C. If If Psychology is to be believed, then no. (Psychology tends to befriend those views which support its persistent use of dichotomies.)
  • Question: Which pattern-of-three is most important?
    • Answer: that is a very good question. Are they equal? Unequal? or without value in any case?

There is so much information to gather and collate, that it is easy to find oneself starting off a writing session (again and again and again) with a different beginning about the beginning of a "threes" origination. So if you encounter a paragraph which appears to be a desirable beginning of a book or chapter, though it sits in the middle of other commentary several pages into a theses, it may very well have been the opening views to a line of thought I had previously used to begin my discussion anew. It can't be helped because I am involved in a expose' which involves both detailed and general summaries requiring extensive lengths of explanation in multiple cases where different examples can intersect, co-mingle, and diverge, just like languages and people. And with respect to the English language, is it a coincidence that the shortest sentence is made of 3 letters: "I am"? Here is a group of three correlates:

  • Exodus 3:14 ("I am"... supposedly the name of God)
  • 3.14 (Frequent 3 numbers abbreviation for Pi)
  • 3.14 (Noted Birth date of Einstein: March 14th)

A search for the Origin(s) of three is similar to a Novel whose author lays out the schematic of a character detective working on a high profile missing person's case, with thousands of clues and hundreds of amateur sleuths offering their 'take' (interpretation) and lists of possible suspects occurring over billions of years. It's not a "who done it?" but a "Where is it?" model of Mystery. Some say it is impossible to find, others say it is similar to the proverbial missing link of humanity. Still others say it is hidden in plain sight like an adaptive camouflage technique trying to deliberately evade detection. If so, this then implies it is alive and active with a motive. Yes, a motive. The "three" may be a part of a higher consciousness trying to emerge past all the superstitious nonsense humanity involves itself with, yet defines such nonsense as state-of-the-art thinking. Thus, the mystery thickens to think that the perpetrator of threes is concealing their identity with many disguises as a mechanism of protection and survival in a primitive environment. However, this will lead us later on to the supposition that we humans are enabled to transfer... at least part of our consciousness into one or more of the three types of Universe domains conceptualized by Mathematics and expressed as positive, negative, neutral curvatures. In any event... Why? Why? Why? There is something quite odd about the number 3.

Take for example the recurrence of "threes" that can be extracted from the literature of biology, not to mention the 3 Photosynthetic Domains of Plants (C3- C4- CAM), and 3 basic shapes to Bacteria:

  1. Coccus: spherical or round
  2. Bacillus: rod-shaped
  3. Spiral: curve, spiral, or twisted
