If we propose that the Trinity and Trimurti were based on earlier (proto)-cultures ideas and then propose that those were themselves due to earlier pre-civilizations orientations of nature, the ideas of magic and animism may come to mind as precursors to later religious-linked contemplations (and eventually ritualized practices). While it is a contemporary view to label a proto-civilization in terms of its tool (etc.) usage such as the stone age- bronze age, iron age, the usage of the word "animism" can be misinterpreted to refer primarily to animals, because of the close association to its spelling. A better word might be "animated" though it too falls victim to the same type of associated spelling. In any respect, what is basic to all such animistic ideas is the nature of movement. Movement in the mind of a primitive person due to what may be described as a learned hypervigilance... that is, ever watchful for a potential meal or predator... not to mention the occasional falling rocks, leaf, branch, star, nightfall, moon-fall, clouds, rain, or sounds "falling" on one's ears.

It is easy to see how the primitive mind could associate the Sun with a male (stern) figure and the Moon with a (gentle) female figure, even though on the social level in some cases we might find interpretations flip-flopped to suit the disposition of one or more leaders expressing the opposing idea if their followers were asserting themselves by way of a particular male or female attribute. A good representation of this flip-flop attitude by a leader to subdue a crowd in order to enforce a dominant intellectual hold can be seen when Jesus (Matt. 10:34) says he did not come to bring peace but a sword. It is an expressed duality-linked mindset, even if Jesus (and others) did not realize the content as a duality. Dualistic (or dichotomous) thinking is a common characteristic among different people in different eras. Though the usage of dichotomy is the same, some people in positions of leadership or other social sway, have the commonality of duality expressed as a more poignant point because of who they are... though the underlying cognitive pattern to all others is similar.

When pursuing a study of the "3", it is typical for a collector to engage in the scheme where multiple forms and formulas are lumped together to build a rather impressive assortment. Yet, should we continue to do this or become more discriminating in how we sort them? We can loosely describe this behavior as a strategy. While one may argue they all represent variations of a theme referencing the value of 3, there are differences to be noted. For example, to place the idea of the 3rd planet Earth with an example exhibiting three parts such as ring- rang- rung, may initially be claimed to represent "the same thing" which is the value of three; yet the Earth as a singular example may well have a different origin than a three with 3 parts whose individual segments may have been the result of a combination and not as a whole from the first time it was used. A greater problem when looking for an origin is when we have lumped geometric models defined as a three or multiple inter-laced three item clusters due to a product of addition, multiplication, subtraction or division. Does a geometric model of the "3", such as the triangle, have the same origin as a singular 3 or segmented three such as the head- thorax- abdomen of insects?

Are geometric figures symbolic references of numbers, or numbers references for geometric figures, or are both representative of that which the human mind has no context yet in which to seek out, much less acknowledge and use for an alternative (advanced?) form of thought. Does music express numerical valuations or is the use of numbers a crude way of illustrating intimations of cognitive functioning we can only crudely approximate? Is the Universe an illustrated exercise of enumeration underpinning existence, or is number a distorted form of imagery humans have come to agree upon with given symbols and applications only because humanity shares in the same type and level of ignorance? Do the spheres have music, or are both thought to be fundamentals... in that planets run relatively naked in the Universe and music is thought not only to be an innocence in terms of intelligence being stripped of its primitive dispositions, but because it expresses a presumed balance of occurrences we might better defined as cultured repetitions and that in repetition defined as ritual, we can see repeating numerical patterns? Yet, why only a handful of patterns being repeated as if it were a 3-part Morse code, 3-part Braille or 3 types of basic finger prints?

Whereas some people are awestruck by the geometric patterns they see in Nature, there are only a handful of patterns being repeated. These patterns correspond to the three basic body plans of animals called the Assymetrical- Radial- Bilateral, though th Assymetrical might be called Fractal, the Radial called rotation, and the Bilateral expressed as symmetry:

  • Assymetrical (such as a Sponge) = Fractal (Those occurring outside common geometries but are not typical geometries subjected to division, subtraction, addition, or multiplication which are reconstructed elaborations of common geometries.)
    • Example; A triangle constructed with a thousand triangles is not a fractal, no matter which observer is awestruck by the image.
    • Example; A square with a triangle with a circle that are elongated, squashed or compounded is not a Fractal.
    • Example; Fractals are not basic geometries on steroids recognized as never-ending repetition... regardless of who says otherwise.
      • This is extremely simplistic thinking like a person looking into a succession of mirrors and thinking they have discovered a doorway into an undiscovered realization of consciousness).
      • Fractals can be viewed as Mathematics looking at itself in a Carnival Fun House of Mirrors, which scares Mathematicians to death.
  • Radial (such as a starfish, seashell, fingerprint, flower petals arrangement...) = Rotational (Loops, whorls, circular, concentric, etc...)
  • Bilateral (such as the human body) = Symmetrical (Typical geometries, even if one is not familiar with them due to experiences and knowledge base.)

In other words, they are repetitions which can occur within, outside of, and alongside of human perception, attention span and memory... as well as labels and explanations which may not be in a given persons, culture's or species vocabulary... because we have no previous context with which to associate or conceptualize, and may well in fact deliberately ignore or avoid for the sake of preserving whatever status quo we embrace. Such status quos are often expressed in ritualistic behavior and can therefore be viewed as a symbolic means of illustrating a persistence of mind, whether or not such rituals have some acknowledge accompanying enumeration.

Let us look at some correlations of three patterns which are highly suggestive of being similar:

Let me add another set-of-three from Lenses:

Yes, there are other number patterns just as there are multiple biological species, geological deposits and stratifications, and weather patterns that come and go, are idiosyncratic, regularly intermittent, seasonally persistent, or even anomalous... occurring only at a given interval which may or may not take place in one's particular lifetime. You may like, for example, a given number such as 2, or 4, or 5, or 6, or 17, or 13, or 37, or 137, etc., and yet never take your interest to the point of creating some approximated penetrating recital of answering the famous question of "why?". Though you may make a list, it might be limited to an intermittently accessed mental listing of different examples. In your own moments of research, you may or may not come across one or multiple listings referencing the number as having some purported numerological significance that may or may not be embellished with a further reference to such "bait" words as: "spiritual", "magical", "mysterious", "secret", "ancient wisdom", "superior consciousness", "enlightenment", "Nirvana", "reincarnation", "code", or other attribute generally meant to entice you to eventually make a purchase of something. The use of such trigger or bait words is fine to gain attention, but the underlying motivation needs to be scrutinized. It may reveal itself quickly, in a piecemeal fashion, or over an extended period of time that the Chinese are adroit at labeling as "The Long View". Such a view may be someone's short interval of time, another's an extended period of time, and for others, multiple years, decades, or even familial generations. In short, don't buy into the explanations without conferring with different types of sources whose primary interest is to inform and educate as a learning process, and not as a storefront barker's advertisement theme.

Some number patterns, like species, become prominent and then substantially diminish, or die out from one or another inviability. No, it is not the number as a quantity which dies, but as a pattern we cognitively use in a repetitive way. Whereas you can find instances of multiple singular, double, triple, quadruple, quintuplet, sextuplet, septuplet, octuplet... etc., expressed enumerations on some occasion, they have not taken on any especial referencing except for perhaps in the mind of an accountant. And even though a number such as "7" can be seen in a variety of settings, its survival presence is lower than other number patterns. And for those who prefer to focus on patterns-of-two (called binary, duality, dichotomy, pairing, couplet, duo, dyad, etc...), they may customarily not view it in the context of belong to a partnership with other numbers such as one and three. By viewing it separately and claiming it has the greater prominence and importance, one might want to consider the person's ego needs an illustrative emblem of oneness, as if to say it is a "chosen one".

Like life forms, different models of a give number can occur. While some are more prominent as if a dinosaur where nearby, others take on the role of varmints which prefer to conceal themselves in hideaways. Some number patterns are more predacious while others appear to act like value prey on the threshold of extinction. Given expressions of a number pattern can be viewed in terms of a Dodo bird which humanity caused to go extinct, but knowledge of its existence remains and crops up from time to time as a pointed reference. While a given expression of a given enumeration may have been more plentiful in a past era, the example can nonetheless have a place in once's catalogue of participants. For example, the phrase "Between you, me, and the fence post," is a pattern of three that used to be used more often than it is today. At least by way of calculating those I encounter. An older generation was fond of saying it, but I have not encountered anyone of a younger age, unless they are parroting an older person. Yet, overall, the use of patterns-of-three in expressions has not gone out of favor. Some such as "I Love You", "In the Beginning", "Break a Leg", "Dog Eat Dog", "Sex- Drugs- Rock n' Roll", "etc"... (at least in English) are widely known and used. However, this does not mean they won't fall out of favor or don't show up in one or another setting. Indeed, there may be multiple others which occur to a given person or group but rarely or ever extend beyond them. However, this is true for other-than-three patterns as well.

While there are expressions I recall from childhood, these may not have the same routine of sustained exchange as I experienced them. For example (off the top of my head):

    • Go Jump in the Lake- Swallow a snake- (and) Come out with a Belly ache.
    • School's out! School's out! The Teacher let the Monkeys out!; One went East, One went West, One went up the Teacher's dress,
    • See my finger- See my thumb- See my fist, you better run.
    • 1st is worse, 2nd's the same, 3rd is best in every game.
    • You think you Bad, You think you Cool, it's kinda sad cause you're just a Fool (A personal concoction to be exchanged between a younger brother.)
    • Red Rover- Red Rover- Call (someone's name) Right over (children's game)
    • Crack The Whip (children's game)
    • Hide n' Seek (children's game)
    • Strut Miss Suzy (children's game)...
      • While playing, we would say: "Strut Miss Suzy-Suzy-Suzy; Strut Miss Suzy, all night long... Here comes another one- just like the other one- Here come's another one, all night long".
    • Mother May I?
    • Swing The Statue

Yet, I know where these threes originated, at least for my person circumstances. It was the neighborhood, playground and culture of childhood. By extending this idea into a formulated analogy, we can say that Physicists are looking for the neighborhood, playground and culture from which a 3-patterned atomic particles landscape originated. Did all originate in one place at the same time, or at different intervals at different times, and we of today are merely observing a transitional expression that may eventually fall by the wayside, despite the present understanding of Natural laws? The same goes for the origin of the DNA triplet code in genetics as well as the 3 Germ layers in developmental biology. No less, it is true for the repetition of the "three" in multiple subjects. Where do they come from? Are some era-specific or brain-development specific? It is a fluke of the present era of humanity? Do we fully embrace the notions of Numerology or Obsessive/Compulsiveness or religion as presumed answers, or are these mere influencers of only a few examples? Is quantity to be viewed as quality, or is quality based on preferential interest to be the defining character? Do all threes (as well as other number and geometric patterns) come from a single source, two sources, or more than three? Does the presence of a three or other number/geometric pattern represent a condition similar to the evolution of humans, the evolution of life, or the evolution of the Universe prior to the establishment of life?

In investigating the "3s phenomena" (or any other type of pattern) it is easy to be caught up in thinking that the source for all instances is due to a single influence such as describing all Trinities or Triads as symbolic extensions of the Christian Trinity, and not looking up it as but another example of multiple others. And many of those others may have been created by some former triad, but does not lead us towards unraveling what was the first, foremost originating influence. Whereas we can see a plurality of life forms and that all of them have a basic genetics code of three, this does not necessarily mean a life's form eventual display of a 3-part body form is directly due to the DNA triple code. Both the code,. and the 3-part body form (such as the head- thorax- abdomen of insects) may have the same or different originators. Parallel developments of a same (or even different) pattern may emerge in the same environment where the physiology of a given organism is the variable of how it will respond to a give stimulus. If one ends up with a pattern-of-three and another ends up with a pattern-of-five, this doesn't mean the source is different.

We can have multiple vertebrate life forms developed by different environmental pressures, yet they share the same underlying basic Pentadactyl scaffolding. We consider the skeleton more fundamental than the overt body appearance, yet because of the convention to point out the skeleton with reference to the five toes and fingers, their is a penchant for the 1-2-many bones model to be overlooked and identified as a pattern-of-three. So if one person is claiming a recurrence of threes, another may want to try to refute the value by pointing out the "penta (five) dactyl" structures and overlook the larger presence of the 3-model. Not only is five larger than three, but it gains more weight when used by multiple professionals. Clearly the adoption of a new idea that is being taught widely in schools throughout the world will be hard pressed to change. Yet, I am in good company since History provides us with multiple occurrences attesting to the ignorance of professionals in different sectors of society:

There are multiple references for the rejection of ideas which later became quite valuable and viable:

Refraining from the use of words like magic, mystery, mysticism,, supernatural, spirituality, religion, god, spectral presence, Numerology, Obsessive/Compulsive, secrecy, subtle energy, Cosmological forces, Universal consciousness, inter-dimensional awareness, mathematical/musical concordances ... and the like... may be difficult for those inclined towards interpreting patterns (or "lack thereof" viewed as another type of pattern); but is a necessary exercise for sharpening one's cognitive toolage otherwise noted as seeking clarity by being more objective. While placing a hammer in a gardener's tool kit might at first seem out of place until one realizes its value for hammering in stakes as identification markers, the same tool in a first aid or seamstress' kit, may necessarily welcome the need for scrutinizing one's rationale.

Yep, I was subjected to a series of three-part expressions in childhood, which were memorized. Most of these are recalled from living in the Eastern part of the U.S., while the 4th and 5th examples are while living in the Southwest. As I grew older and no one played such games, my mind eventually turned to Encylopedic sources because older people that I came into contact with were particularly vacuous of multiple subjects. As a child, while not playing the part of an experimenter, inventor, or director of neighborhood sports and entertainment, the neighborhood kids got together to play one of three dominant games: Kickball, Baseball, Basketball. As for mechanized modes of transport, there also were three: Bikes, skate-boards, pogo-sticks. (Yes, we would race with pogo-sticks in terms of who could stay on the longest and get the most jumps). Alternatively, there was the use of skates, go-carts, unicycles for brief moments. In my younger years I was a participating Numerologist-Mathematician. I would count every other (every 3rd) stave of a fence, or jump to the 3rd brick on a walkway, or add, subtract, multiply and divide street numbers, house numbers, etc. as well as count the number of birds on a telephone line or the barks of dogs... caws of crows, honking of horns, etc... At other times I would count the number of times a person blinked their eyes, or coughed, said a given word. On one occasion much later in life while working at an accounting firm/loan office, I made a list of the number of times different people knocked on a door to get access to secured information. 3 knocks stood out very prominently. After sharing the exercise I had created with a few fellow workers, I don't need to tell you that I was viewed as being a little weird, if not strange for my unconventional thinking... which caused me to eventually lose the job...but thank goodness... I didn't like the place nor people anyway. (A collection of single-minded peanut counters.) To me, the counting of knocks was a simplistic exercise a 1st year psychology student might have done for extra credit. Needless to say, I didn't really belong at that job.

You may come across someone who likes to express one or more three-patterned, or two-patterned, or singular phrases... and yet they may or may not be cognizant of doing so. The point is we can see, if we take the time to look, particular quantitative patterns being used by few, none, or multiple people in isolated or cross-cultural contexts. However, cognitive scientists do not routinely pursue patterns of cognition by expressed articulations of ideas which can be quantified. The numbers 3, number 7, number 13 are three examples of numbers which have given the impression of a mindset that is not to be taken seriously. Whereby if someone brings up the topic of identifying behavior in quantitative terms, a brief and very selective instance may be allowed, but not if multiple ideas in multiple subjects are placed on the Detective's chalk board, white board, and bulletin boards being used as a visual model of examination to acquire a holistic perspective that might enable unseen inter-connections to be made. Whereas detectives, at least in the movies, exercise a model of illustration akin to the elementary school instruction for showing one's work ((particularly in mathematics); this is not the case for multiple investigators who want to keep their efforts concealed for fear of theft, fear of having made a simple error, or simply by being secretive they can create an aura of mystique to be interpreted as the action of a genius.

While new ideas are fledgling efforts, one must wonder if today's professions would even exist if the early investigators of centuries past had used electronic mediums for exchanging ideas... or would they have lost interest because there are so many readers who have axes to grind?
