Om is AUM

Om, in Hinduism and other religions chiefly of India, a sacred syllable that is considered to be the greatest of all the mantras, or sacred formulas. The symbol Om is composed of the three sounds a-u-m (in Sanskrit, the vowels a and u coalesce to become o), which represent several important triads:

  • The three worlds of earth, atmosphere, and heaven.
  • The three major Hindu gods, Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva.
  • The three sacred Vedic scriptures, Rg, Yajur, and Soma.

Thus Om mystically embodies the essence of the entire universe. It is uttered at the beginning and end of Hindu prayers, chants, and meditations and is freely used in Buddhist and Jaina ritual also. From the 6th century, the written symbol designating the sound is used to mark the beginning of a text in a manuscript or an inscription. The syllable is discussed in a number of the Upanishads, which are the texts of philosophical speculation, and it forms the entire subject matter of one, the Mandukya. It is used in the practice of Yoga and is related to techniques of auditory meditation. In the Puranas the syllable is put to sectarian use; thus the Saiva mark the lingam, or sign of Siva, with the symbol for Om, whereas the Vaishnava identify the three sounds as referring to a trinity composed of Vishnu, his wife Sri, and the worshipper. The syllable is discussed in a number of the Upanishads (speculative philosophical texts), and it forms the entire subject matter of one, the Mandukya Upanishad. It is used in the practice of Yoga and is related to techniques of auditory meditation. In the Puranas the syllable is put to sectarian use; thus, the Shaivites mark the lingam, or sign of Shiva, with the symbol for om, whereas the Vaishnavites identify the three sounds as referring to a trinity composed of Vishnu, his wife Shri (Lakshmi), and the worshipper.

This number ("3") also is an expression of the social order in its fullness and particularly the threefold structure of Indo-European society. According to Georges Dumezil, if all social structures are analyzed, it will be found that this threefold division only evolved into an all embracing world-view and value structure among particular peoples. Although its origins are unknown, this threefold division of duties or orders is perfectly clear. It is given expression in various triads which easily embrace religion, warfare and work; kingship, martial strength and fecundity; the priesthood, power and productivity; priests, warriors and producers (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva); Brahmans, Kshatriyas (warriors) and Vaishyas (farmers and merchants), Shudras or slaves being as it were outcasts; Jupiter, Mars and Quirinus; Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branches; the senatorial, equestrian and plebeian orders. Interaction takes place between the socio-political and the mythological organizations, each structure being reflected in the other, but they do not always develop at the same pace. Myth changes more slowly than reality, although sometimes it may anticipate it.

As a widely used Meditation chant, I cannot help but wonder if it is being used wrongly. What I am thinking is that if it is sound of some Universal theme, is it a musical sound, an echo like one might hear in a delayed fashion like the pairing of a lightning flash and thunder, or a type of voice, mechanically produced, electronically produced or biologically produced? Is it like the tap-tap-tap of someone banging on an object to get their attention but we have not thought in such terms and thus have not tried to create the means of identifying where the sounds come from and simply refer to is as that which exists in White Noise? What is it that is being heard and only mimicked.. if it is being accurately mimicked at all? Has tradition warped the ability of hearing the 3 sounds in their raw state of exposition so that receptive and perceptive individuals are enabled to detected any possible nuances like an accent, intonation, gender... etc...? Are mediation chanters who use the word "Om" (AUM) repeating it wrongly because the guardians of its past memory have themselves misinterpreted the presumed message and do not know how to respond? Why then are practitioners of Om fearful of a re-analysis outside the confines of the vocabulary attached to ideas which perpetuate the who assemblage of traditional uses? Whereas the sounds manifest themselves as a calling, a voice, a hint, a vague intimation, etc. in different people, why hasn't anyone tried to decipher these languages into some coherency that is not tied to a doctrine of Western religion or Eastern philosophy? Why is it that mantra's are defined as describing three types of communicative language called a sacred utterance using the verbal languages of syllable, word, or verse?

Because "Aum" has a similarity to the name of the Egyptian god Amon-ra and its present day appearance in the use of the word "Amen"... all three of which are linked to religion if not spirituality, we must consider them as part of the same family and look for other members which may exist. One such expression is when we say "umm" when thinking outloud as a deliberation until the right word, action, or idea is found or a suitable replacement:

  • Merrium Webster dictionary; um-hum (used to express affirmation, agreement, comprehension, or interest).
  • The American Heritage dictionary; um/umm (Used to express doubt or uncertainty or to fill a pause when hesitating in speaking.)
  • YourDictionary; Interjection implying hesitation.
  • Wiktionary; umm (to express confusion or hesitancy).
  • Dictionary.com; uhm, uhn, uhm, uhn (used as an expression of doubt, hesitation, deliberation, interest, etc.)

Particle physicists see the aforementioned resonating feature referenced in the 3 families of fundamental particles and the basic atom constructed of 3 named Electrons- Neutrons- Protons. Whereas the Electrons are said not to consist of any smaller particles, the Neutrons and Protons are said to consist of 3 quarks and 3 anti-quarks with a complement of 3 X 3 flavors related to charge values, though most often the size flavors are assembled in sibling-like pairs so as to disclose which generation of the 3 particle families they belong to. By sorting them in terms of simple charge values, we have an array for which a bit of playful mnemonics can be assigned.

The following link is to a short introductory video by Michael Eck and Associates about the concept of three items used in repetition: Book Of Threes. While highly necessary for those who are not familiar with the concept, it is not intended for those readers who steeped deeply into the topic as an intellectual exercise pursuing knowledge more so than those who seek information to be used as a tool of manipulating an audience for the purpose of bolstering sales at a particular venue of application.

While contemplating patterns-of-three and inter-active complexities is quite familiar to some, to others it may be a way of thinking they are not accustomed to, particularly in the sense of making correlations in topics requiring a more directed interest in multiple subjects. For example, whereas you may be familiar with the topic of Biology, you do not customarily study it and therefore are not familiar with more intimate and specific kinds of knowledge to be found in textbooks readily available through a public library (which is a luxury taken for granted by millions)— even though you are quite familiar with everyday cultural uses of the "three" pattern once it is pointed out as a recurring theme of cognitive activity... and for example, cognitive activity related to the topics of the origins of consciousness and life occurring in an incrementally deteriorating planetary environment.

An exzmple of conceptual framing

When speaking simply about patterns, much less pursuing a possible origin for a specific one such as patterns-of-three, a label to be applied might well be "conceptual framework". Whether your interest is in the geometric shapes of nature such as the whirls in some sea shells as the Nautilus and the human cochlea, or honey bee hive structures, or patterned enumeration counts of leaves (titled the Fibonacci sequence) triangles, or star-shapes, or take on the framework of linear- circular- triangular, etc.. or your interest lays in other types of patterns be it sound, movement, sensation, smells, numbers, etc., all such patterns as well as the recurring non-patterns could be viewed as conceptual/mental, emotional or physiologically responsive frameworks... if not scaffolding and blueprints.

There are several different types of frameworks one might encounter, many of which emphasize some numerical count of steps. Others may not do so and instead focus on the material organized with a given segment that another observer might well organize in terms of some enumeration. Let us take one example of a framework so that the reader may have some idea of what is being spoken of, so long as they do not mistakenly conclude it is a standard model:

An example of a research framework

While the image displays a 3-part engagement of ideas, it is used in the context of defining the Research framework as a dichotomy, namely:

  • Theoretical; It is formulated from existing theories and serves as the foundation of the study....
  • Conceptual; It is derived from a combination of theories or parts of theories (from which a new theory may arise)....

The usage of the previous two speaks of a psychology influence where there is a Persistent use of dichotomies when speaking of human thinking behavior. It does not allow for mutagenic, "ah-ha", or the otherwise inspiration superseding these conventions. Sometimes referred to as a flash of genius, a light bulb over the head effect, or the Eureka! expression for a totally unexpected illumination that seems to have no apparent connection with any former theory or assumption(s).

While it is easy to collect different examples of "threes" (or any pattern) from different subject areas or even a single area such as religion and claim they are related and may have been inspired by the same influence such as a god, particularly if such a belief is also composed of three elements, it is another to prove the link or linkages. For example, if you came across the Rosetta stone or other accounts of symbols labeled as a symbolic language, you would not automatically know that they were in fact a language or an account of the same topic in three different languages. The same goes for an initial observation of figures in groups of three. For example, let us say you come across a room or field filled with different statues and carvings of figures we of today call mythological and religious figures, but did not know any of them by name or familiarity. While there are 3, all of them would look differently in appearance. Some may have an animal head, others wearing a crown, and still others accompanied with swords, spears, etc... Other than there being three of each grouping, how would we interpret them, and in particular, begin to claim they belong to a type of similar thinking such as for example about Natural events? Let me provide a few random examples of three-patterned groupings:

Random groups of three figures

If you come across the foregoing items, your first inclination may be to categorize them as sets of three. Yet, without a context they may simply be viewed as a curio like a common person walking through a zoo who may have no working framework for comparison and further analysis, though images of their visit and certain observations may turn up later on elsewhere by which some level of analogy is made.

As one may say, despite the variability of species on the planet...

  • The central core attribute consistent with all of them is that they most likely have a triplet DNA code.
  • Despite all the planets, as far as we know, the DNA triplet code arose solely on the 3rd planet... regardless of any and all suppositions to the contrary.
  • No less, despite the origin of basic biologically significant micro- and macro-molecules from outside the Earth, inside the Earth, below the surface of the ocean or above it... the 3rd planet is upon that which they were able to grow or not. (In other words, let us not automatically conclude that such materials which did not contribute to life on Earth would not be suitable elsewhere in the Universe for generating life quite foreign to the ideas used by humans to define life.
  • However, it cannot be overstated to bring to the fore the valid point that Astronomers of today observe a dominant organization of Binary and not Trinary or Quaternary or other grouping quantity of stars. This suggests the "3s" being witnessed by humans is a direct result of an Earth Influenced Conditioning. As the system of Conditioning changes, so will the biological, physiological and psychological dimensions of life.
  • Let us also acknowledge the important role the Three Germ Layers play in the development of animals which are part of the Eukaryote branch of the 3 Domains of life. It is this 3rd branch from which the most complex life forms arise.

Yet let us not forget the most fundamental role of particle physics.

  • 3 main particles (Neutrons- Protons- Electrons)
  • 3 quarks and anti-quarks
  • . On some occasions particles have been described as stable- Unstable- Highly unstable.
  • 3 levels of 'weight' attributed to the 3 Generations (families) of particles:
    • 3rd-generation particles all weigh thousands of MeV. (Mega/Millions of electron Volts)
    • 2nd-generation particles weigh roughly hundreds of MeV.
    • 1st-generation particles come in at around an MeV each.
  • There are 3 generations of Matter and 3 of anti-matter.

In the human way of thinking there are considered to be 3 possibilities for the shape of the Universe:

  1. Positive Curvature
  2. Negative Curvature
  3. Flat Curvature

3 geometries of the Universe
What shape is the Universe?

When we speak of Matter states, there are 3 common to the Earth: (Solids- Liquids- Gases); with 1 (Plasma) associated with the Universe. And with respect to the 3 states of matter, we encounter the idea of a triple point, where all three are in equilibrium, with water being an often used example to be portrayed with the 3 common scales of measurement (Celsius- Fahrenheit- Kelvin):

3 common temperature scales

The following video is a wonderful tribute to patterns-of-three in multiple subject areas, though I must admit I am quite livid that it is so short and does not actually do the pattern its due justice of needed illustration and explication. Nonetheless, it is a marvelous rendition:

The Beauty of three

Seeking out the origin of "threes ideas"... for example, containing three persons, ideas, or symbols entitled Triad, Triune, and Trinity, we can come up with these examples in a religions context, all the while admitting there are others to be found in other ideas:

  • Christian Trinity:
  • Indian Trimurti:
    • 3 sounds of the Meditation Chant called Om which is AUM because of the A and U coalescing.
      • Ahh
      • Ouu
      • Mmm
    • 3 basic enumerated symbols:
      • Four-pointed Swastika (genderless)
      • Six-Pointed star of Shiva (as a male)
      • Eight-pointed star of Lakshmi (as a female)
    • Trishula (trident)
    • A snake coils three times around Nataraja's (Shiva) neck, symbolizing all of time – past, present, and future.
    • Tripundra is associated with Shaivism (Shiva). It consists of three horizontal lines, and a bindi (3rd eyd) at the center.
    • Tri-shakti (Trident + Om + Swastika): is a powerful emblem of feminine energy.
      • Swastika signifies good luck, auspiciousness, and the cyclic nature of life.
      • AUM represents the primordial sound and the essence of reality.
      • Trishul symbolizes power and the divine trinity of creation, preservation, and destruction.

The point to the foregoing list is to illustrate how the pattern of an idea referenced as Trinity or Trimurti can influence the creation of other 3-part "afterward" ideas. And yet, when the "before" ideas are subjected to an analysis to seek out their origin(s), both Trinity or Trimurti believers have cultures which are inclined to pronounce themselves as unique and having originated solely from whatever conception they have of a god. In other words, they claim that the Trinity or Trimurti originated from a specific god and nothing else. However, others are more open to the possibility that such ideas have historical precursors and may even be the product of cultural "appropriations" (theft, enslavement, rape, etc...) and/or amalgamations of bits and pieces.

The fact that we can see the ancient Egyptians with sets of three gods and that such a religion is said to predate at least Christianity and Islam, if not Hinduism, and Judaism, leads some level of credence to the idea that ideas for the Trinity and Trimurti may have been influenced by ancient Egypt, unless one wants to argue for a parallel development, the origination for at least the beginning ideas of the Trinity and Trimurti originated in Egypt. However, since many arguments of priority are based on written documents, one might also argue for example, that very ancient cave paintings, tools, and burials are in part (or in whole), representative types of religion oriented human expression. For example, the fashioning of triangle-based tools, however crudely shaped initially, could be interpreted to be a "trinity" or triad.

Yet, this begs the question of what may have influenced this same design by many early peoples if they could not find such laying around due to environmental processes. In other words, what natural event may have influenced such a design to be adopted not only by humans, but by the later arriving Termitidae (sometimes referred to as "higher termites") with pyramidal mounds. However, one might also look at the conical-shaped pits of antlions as inverted models of a triangle. And if we are not too strict and provide some leeway for crudeness or truncatedness, the mounds of beavers as well as the V-shaped flight formations of migrating birds could be added to the list... even though many other species do not appear to visibly express a distinct or crudely distinct form, formula or functionality. Then again, using a pattern-of-three as an investigative tool in one discipline of biology across all species is not a common instrument, even if it was used by:

    • C. J. Thomsen with his Three Age System (Stone-Bronze-Iron) is a methodological concept adopted during the 19th century according to which artefacts and events of late prehistory and early history could be broadly ordered into a recognizable chronology.)
      • It is thought that the "division by ages" idea was influenced by Lucretius, whose work "on the Nature of things" (or, Nature of the Universe), are common cognitive themes found in the minds and work of multiple people, one of whom is Charles Sanders Peirce.
    • Sigmund Freud Freud in analyzing multiple people with his 3-part Id-Ego-Superego
    • 3 historically used social race categories of humanity: Asians- Caucasians- Negroids (Just because you don't accept this idea doesn't mean it didn't appear in human thought processing and at one time was viewed as a truth by millions.)
    • Sir Edward Burnett Tylor's three basic stages of development: from savagery, through barbarism to civilization.
    • Charles Sanders Peirce's 3 Universal Principles: (Where he viewed thoughts on origination as a series of 1st principles:)
      • Three key principles that govern the Universe:
    • Georges Dumezil in his Trifunctional Hypothesis (aka Tripartite Ideology) for examining different cultures.
    • Paul D. MacLean's Triune brain model.
