Earlier ideologies had conceptualizations that were likely based on star groupings such as the seven stars of the Big Dipper and those of the Pleiades (seven sisters), or the seven known planets in antiquity,, as well as conforming to earlier ideas based on the quantity of four elements such as the water- earth- fire- air, or the four humors: black bile (also known as melancholy), yellow or red bile, blood, and phlegm; or the for directions (forward- backward- right side- left side)... which later changed to six by the addition of up and down. Later on there was a count of five elements: fire- water- wood- metal- earth and a school curriculum based on the seven pattern called the seven liberal arts was divided into two categories where the 3 and 4 values show up: The Trivium consisted of grammar, logic, and rhetoric and the Quadrivium consisted of arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy. Let it be noted that the idea of a quadrivium preceded that of a Trivium, or thinking in a 4-pattern orientation based on the use of more ancient subjects that those of the 3-pattern Trivium.
The fact remains that we do not customarily encounter theories (how, what, why), ideas (3-part process), hypothesis (null, simple, complex), etc... with a general or specific scaffolding of hundreds, thousands, millions, etc., of headings, categories, sections, etc... though variations of less or more than three abound. Yet we do in fact pay witness to the fact that we do customarily see cognitive activity displays with singular or double or even triple patterned structuring, Such a situation bespeaks to the idea that human mental processing is CONSERVED. It is conserved by the very fact we do not have every single person born with a potential for achieving a 999+ I.Q. Most people apparently achieve a score between 85- 115 (on what are sometimes believed to be contrived) tests, with the average IQ in the U.S. at 98... though there have been a few reported to have High IQs, which are the exception and not the rule.
As for some basic references to cognitive compartmentalizations, knowing we could add and subtract criteria, let us look at several examples, the last of
which I conjured up from imagination in order to include the rest of the vowels (AEIOU... and sometimes Y, since "H0 and HA" were interpreted as letters and
not the intended zero and one representations: H
(Yep, I made this up for fun.) |
Apparently, those who have designed this Online IQ test are not aware (just like many others aren't) of underlying cognitive predilections which can be enumerated, and have designed the test as a 3 X 3 grid, as if everyone likes playing Tic- Tac- Toe, or the (0-8 with an empty space) Number Maze puzzle; though if a grid of four is used, we then have examples such as the child's hand held (1-15 with an empty space) puzzle as well as the same grid showing up in the Amino acid sequencing chart and the defined 4 X 4 grid of atomic particles.
So, is there a dominant underlying grid pattern being used by humans whether expressed in a grid or otherwise? Is it based on a duality as seen in multiple board games such as Chess, Checkers, Go, etc., and yet in the board games of chess and checkers the recurring theme of 64 squares shows up similar to that in one type of amino acid display? Not to mention the board representing an outlined parameter of conservation within which playing pieces can move in the 3 directions of vertical- horizontal- diagonal, and that borders (parameters) of play are set up within a context where two or more players are competing.. Perhaps it hasn't crossed any test giver's consideration that a particular person may have an underlying "cognitive grid" where a pattern other-than-three may be dominating due to education, experience, culture, gender, nutrition, etc..., and that even if a particular grid-ing system (instead of grading system) is used, then the pattern in which a test is given determines the gradient a person can perform, regardless if the test givers think a particular set of test questions are simple and do not rely on an underling cognitive grid. And I am not talking about content, I am speaking of very basic cognitive patterning such as for example, the basic instinctual pattern of Flight- Fight- Freeze in some instances by some people whose own cognitive repertoire does not provide 3 options, but 2 or 1. Here is an example of an online IQ test with its 3 X 3 grid, alongside an example of average IQs, though different sources may provide slightly different values.
However, as contrived are the testing methods and similarly the results acquired, the tests indicate results for this type of test and all its variables of place, time, test giver personality, etc... It may not measure your wisdom, your insight, your creativity, your originality of thought, foresight, hindsight, peripheral vision, character, etc., and thus does not test the Whole you. Only a very selective proportion is being tested with respect to questions which may be confusing to some, or require an ability of visual activity coordination one is not too familiar with being exhibited wit an unfamiliar medium with unfamiliar objects.
With respect to the conservation (parsimony) of enumeration being encountered, even when we list 15 overall brain structures, we find a way to condense and symbolize smaller compartmentalizations or funtionalities such as describing three main parts to the brain: (Cerebrum- Cerebellum- Brainstem), 3 parts to the brainstem: (Midbrain- Pons- Medulla), 3 brain coverings called the Menges: (Pia mater- Dura mater= Arachnoid process), including using an old Surveyor's orientation of basic directional orientation by referring to 4 quadrants to describe the brain and its associated valuations being used for different contexts and may contain different place names for the quadrants which may also be described as a whole or wholistic brain; though when we look at a present day approach for describing the 4 directions, we use a 3-to-1 ratio similar to that in basic number notation, where three items are separated by a comma, or in this case with the word "and": (North- South- East AND West).
Both the symbol "comma" and word "and" are measurement points of demarcation between three items and the next value(s) which can be labeled as a 3-to-1 ratio, 3 -to- 1 split, etc., or the opposite, where the "1" is placed first.
THREE Items | Separator type | ONE Item |
North~ South~ East | "and" | West |
Winter~ Spring~ Summer | "and" | Fall |
1- potato~ 2- potato~ 3- potato | no signifier "potato" | 4 |
2 bits~ 4 bits~ 6 bits | "a" | Dollar |
ones tens hundreds | (comma) | thousands |

Although basic rules of compartmentalizing mathematical orientations is the use of a binary scheme of ideas, we can on occasion find some excursions into the adoption of three rules for rounding out a number:
- When the digit to the right of the one being rounded to is less than a 5, the remaining digit remains the same as the value rounds down.
- For example, 33.742 is to be rounded to one decimal place. Here, the 7 in the first decimal place is followed by a 4, which is less than 5, which means that 33.742 rounded to one decimal place is 33.7. Note that only the 4 that is to the right of the 7 is looked at here; the 2 in the third decimal place is insignificant when rounding to one decimal place.
- When the digit to the right of the one being rounded to is greater than 5, the value rounds up.
- For example, 2.8763 is to be rounded to two decimal places. In this case, the 6 in the third decimal place is greater than 5, so the 7 in the second decimal place is rounded up to 8. This means that when rounded to two decimal places, 2.8763 rounds to 2.88. Again, the 3 in the fourth decimal place is insignificant when rounding to two decimal places.
- When the digit to the right of the one being rounded to is exactly a 5 (which means no nonzero digit follows it), the value is rounded so that the final
digit is an even number. This rule is designed to avoid always rounding up or always rounding down; it creates more balance when rounding.
- Thus, 21.45 rounds to one decimal place to 21.4, while 36.75 would round to 36.8. However, if a value such as 38.25003 is to be rounded to one decimal place, it rounds to 38.3. This is the only type of rounding where a digit farther than immediately to the right of the one being rounded to is ever considered. In this example, the digit looked at when rounding off to one decimal place is a 5. However, farther along the decimal portion of the value there is a nonzero digit. The number being rounded is therefore rounded up, as the 0.00003 indicates that the value of 0.05003 is larger than just the 0.05. For this reason, the value rounded to one decimal place is 38.3, not 38.2.
While different approaches to analyzing the brain may be found, such as a 2-patterned divisioning by way of the left and right hemispheres, the point to be made in the present context is the presence of limitations. Indeed, we don't have multi-brained life forms, and in at least one case there exists the idea of a Triune Brain Theory by Paul D. MacLean and Triarchic Model of Intelligence by Robert Sternberg. To this list we might well add the Trifunctional Hypothesis of Georges Dumezil which describes 3 recurring positions of social stratification in Proto-Indo-European Cultures that can be viewed as original influences of later 3-patterned social stratifications such as the 3 Branches of the U.S. Government.
Some Critical Observations of Dumezil's Theory
In a long series of important and stimulating publications Georges Dumézil has for almost half a century not only re-established a complex of theories with regard to the comparative study of ancient Indo-European mythology, but also applied a modernized comparative method. In investigating the foundations of the Indo-European socio-religious conceptions he bases his arguments and conclusions, it is true, to a certain extent on linguistic data, but these are always amplified and corroborated by a thorough consideration of the social structure, religious beliefs and ritual institutions of the ancient Indians, Romans, Germans, Celts and Greeks. Especially these last thirty-five years his work is of great originality in that he has founded and developed the theory of the trois fonctions, of the "three fundamental activities which the groups of priests, warriors and producers must fulfill and assure in order to maintain their community". In this theory it is not the tripartite social organization of the prehistoric Indo-Europeans that is emphasized, but the principle of classification, the ideology to which, in Dumézil's opinion, this organization has given rise. Being reflected in the groupings of, and mutual relations between, the divine powers and in the very structure of Indo-European mythology and view of the world it is here again the ideological rather than the strictly sociological aspects that invite the reader's attention.
#2, The reality of social distinctions, and particularly of the three (Dumezilian social) 'orders' among the ancient Indo-European peoples, and the probability of their prehistoric existence has long been recognized. One wonders not to find, in Dumézil's historical survey, other names beside those of Spiegel and Benveniste (L'ideologie tripartie, p. 18): see e.g., the data collected in Schrader, O. and Nehring, A., Reallexikon der indogermanischen Altertumskunde, II (Berlin-Leipzig 1929), p. 456 ff.Google Scholar.
While there are scores of people who don't accept any of these theories, it doesn't matter. For example, in the case of Dumezil's idea being confronted by those who describing seeing a Trifunctional model in non-Indo-European cultures as if to refute a claim of Trifunctionality occurring solely with Indo-Europeans misses the larger point of overall human cognitive patterning. And just because a culture cannot see its repetative usage of a given pattern doesn't mean others can't or that it doesn't exist. These three ideas are at least important enough to be seriously considered and attacked by would-be debunkers who have a different interpretation. Who cares if you believe in a quadrant brain, or a two-hemisphere brain, or a theory of Multiple Intelligences by Howard Gardner. Every single one of the different ideas, if and when collected, speak to the presence of a repeating Conservation of cognitive patterning usage. Again, this conservation is being forced on us by an incrementally deteriorating environment with a shrinking stock of resources and that biological processes adapt to such with the adoption of rationalizations for accepting the changes (at least in the case of humans). The very fact that we can see recurrences of underlying enumerations of thought processing is a tell-tale sign of human cognitive activity (and ability) having been influenced. Did the originators of the ideas with a "three" frame of reference do so because of a religious affinity? What made them use a "three" theme in their ideas and not the theme being proposed by their would-be detractors? And yet in many cases, we see detractors using some other enumerated theme in opposition to the three, but do not recognize their usage also is part of the overall Conservation of patterning being expressed by the human brain. They don't see it and they don't get it.
Focusing the view of conservation onto a smaller part of overall life processing, here we have: only three other known cases a once-independent bacterium has evolved into an organelle that provides nitrogen to algal cells. In other words, the origination of life appears to have occurred by way of biological fusion (2 become 1) and not independent multiplication (2 +). While perhaps simplistic to some readers, what it describes is an early model of Nature's mathematics. It replicates internally and not externally, and thus exhibits and effected conservation. While some may want to dismiss this and others embrace it as "just part of nature", I want to point out that it also suggests an ENFORCED conservation as a survival mechanism in response to the planet's ongoing environmental degradations in conjunction with the Moon and Earth. To continue allowing biological processes to be subjected to this, means we are headed for extinction, and the only viable course of action seen at the moment is to combine all resources from the entire planet and build a space fleet to remove those systems of biology we wish to preserve. If need be, we will have to use the fervor of religious orientations because waiting on governments and businesses is like trying to move a stubborn mule.
We see this conservation in the table of a mere 118 Elements for the Entire Universe, a handful of particles make up the structure of atoms, the 26 letter English alphabet, the 0-9 limit of initial numbers, daily time scales, (seconds- minutes- hours), athlete performance limits, a 12 month scale of 365 days, life spans, etc... This is because we are forced to do so as an adaptive feature as a survival mechanism in the constraints of complying with an incrementally deteriorating planetary system that also has a shelf life. And it doesn't matter if you believe in this idea or that idea. If it can be enumerated as an example of human cognitive activity it has a value. There is a definable statistical probability for certain patterns to reoccur because of the closed system in which biology operates according to an as yet unrecognized "law" governing the incremental decrease in life sustaining resources.
While limitations are easy to spot, not so are those ideas which used a "three" view of construction, only to find out later that a 2-fold structure was the rule-of-thumb, one exception being where the cell membrane was previously viewed as a trilaminar configuration only to be replaced by those who used a two-patterned Bi-lipid perspective, though if you look at the cell yourself you will see a three organization, whether or not the labeling is meant to draw your attention to a 2-part structure where a 3-part construction exists. You say Toe May Toe, another says Toe Ma Toe.
- Triple Helix Model was initially proposed for DNA. Later to be understood as being double stranded.
- Three pairs of wings proposed for the Protopterygote: It was hypothesised that the ancestral winged-insect (protopterygote) had three pairs of hinged, veined, thoracic lobes and the mid- and hind-lobes (on the meso- and metathorax) subsequently evolved into fully articulated wings. (Further evidence revealed this was not the case.)
- It was Hitler who viewed his efforts as a "Third Reich".
- It is not uncommon to have encountered a story in which three aliens are described, or there were 3 alien ships sighted, or three lights on a ship, or a V-shaped flight pattern... if not Triangle-shaped ships were involved and that sightings are observed by three people.
While the reader's ego may lean them towards defining those who engaged in such "three" speculation were wrong, they were not wrong in terms of exhibiting a characteristic of human mental functioning oriented to some value of the "three". There are no doubt other examples strewn about, but these are the two that come to mind to provide an aside comment. An entire book may one day be written by someone with a title such as "They thought there were three, unti1..."
